After months of trying to figure this out, a fresh reinstall and careful reinstall of all the mods I was using fixed my problem and mpclothes + any custom clothing packages will work once again.

Still works great, maybe some of them might not work as you'd expect if you remove the Gen 9 stuff, but it still saves a lot of time and trouble. Thanks for sharing this, man!
